Undergraduate Presentations at BMES 2008

  • Each year, the Biomedical Engineering Society encourages the participation of undergraduates in its annual meeting. Interested undergraduates should prepare a short abstract on the research project they accomplished over the summer. The research adviser(s) should provide guidance on writing the abstract. In the final form, the abstract should include a title (concise and descriptive), complete list of authors, affiliations, and an acknowledgment of funding. Lead authors should provide full contact information in their email correspondence. The abstract body should be 200 words (maximum).
  • Completed abstracts will be accepted through this same online submission system starting in July. The OPENING date for REU submissions is July 7th. The CLOSING date for REU submissions is August 1st, 5:00 pm EDST. Authors will be notified of their abstract status starting August 18th. Acceptance is contingent on quality of submitted abstracts.
  • BMES memberships are an application process and take time to process and approved. So, to ensure sufficient membership approval and processing time all meeting registrants must be a member in good standing by August 8th [application and payment must be in BMES offices no later than 11:59 p.m. EDST] to be eligible for the member discounted registration rates. Visit www.bmes.org for details on BMES membership and benefits.
  • Presenters will be expected to register for the BMES meeting at the regular student registration rate. Please note: Early registration deadline discounts expire August 29, 2008. If your abstract is not selected and you decide to cancel your registration, you will not be charged a cancellation processing fee.

Abstract Presenter Information

Platform Presentations

  • Platform sessions are 1.5 hours in length and are usually comprised of 6 presentations per session.

    Each room will be equipped with:
    * A PC-compatible computer with a CD drive, available USB port, and PowerPoint
    * LCD projector and screen
    * Lectern with microphone

    During the half hour before your session begins, please upload your presentation onto the computer using a CD or memory stick. Because of the potential difficulty transferring MAC files to PC format, we encourage MAC users to test their presentations on a PC in advance and avoid the use of animation if there is any question about transferability.

    Please do not try to connect your own laptop as the resulting connectivity issues always slow down the session. It will not be possible to provide special equipment. Any additional equipment will need to be provided and supported by the presenter. There will not be any internet connections available in the presentation rooms.

    Session chairs should keep sessions on the listed schedule so that attendees can move back and forth among sessions. In most cases, presentations should be done in twelve minutes, allowing three minutes for questions and transition to the next presenter.
