Student Events, Sessions and Activities at the 2008 BMES Annual Meeting

  • BMES Career Connections, BMES's job placement services - new for 2008! Take advantage of this face to face opportunity with the largest group of BME undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students and you could end your job search at the BMES meeting. BMES's Career Connections enhances communications between employers and job candidates through online posting, listings and scheduling. Candidates can identify which companies are attending our Meeting, contact and share their resume's with you directly and schedule face-to-face interviews online and in advance! Limited scheduling is available in our inaugural year, so be sure to sign up early.
  • Student Resume Review and Writing Workshop
    • Students can get a one-on-one resume review and writing tips from career services professionals and industry representatives. Bring a few copies of your resume.
  • BME Alumni Career Panel
    • BME alumni share their job experiences. Hear first hand advice and information from government engineers, career services professionals and industry representatives and more.

  • Undergraduate Research Sessions
    Undergraduate research platform sessions are presented throughout the Meeting, and there will be undergraduate poster and platform presentations in several time blocks. The presentations in these sessions are chosen from submissions of undergraduates, during the summer. Abstracts for these sessions are compiled and printed as a separate highlighted booklet.
  • Student Chapter Development and Leadership Workshops
    • 1. Student Chapter Development Workshop This workshop will focus on increasing inter-chapter networking by encouraging the sharing and generation of ideas about developing/sustaining student BMES chapters. Specific topics will include fundraising, member recruitment, enhancing undergraduate and graduate student involvement, personal development programs (e.g., social and service events), professional development programs (e.g., industry, academic, medical events), and a brief introduction to student leadership techniques.
    • 2. Student Leadership Workshop This workshop will be for those students that are interested in enhancing their leadership skills and/or their involvement with BMES at a national level. Various leadership methods and techniques will be discussed. A board of student leaders that are interested in working with BMES at a regional and/or national level will be created. Students' newly acquired leadership skills will then be applied to the development of community, a vision, and a plan of action for the new BMES national student leadership board.
  • Undergraduate Presentations at BMES 2008
    Each year, the Biomedical Engineering Society encourages the participation of undergraduates in its annual meeting. Interested undergraduates should prepare a short abstract on the research project they accomplished over the summer. The research adviser(s) should provide guidance on writing the abstract. In the final form, the abstract should include a title (concise and descriptive), complete list of authors, affiliations, and an acknowledgment of funding. Lead authors should provide full contact information in their email correspondence. The abstract body should be 200 words (maximum).
  • Completed abstracts will be accepted through this same online submission system starting in July. The opening date for REU abstract submissions AUGUST 1st 5:00 pm EDST. Authors will be notified of their abstract status starting August 18th. Acceptance is contingent on quality of submitted abstracts.
  • BMES memberships are an application process and take time to process and approved. So, to ensure sufficient membership approval and processing time all meeting registrants must be a member in good standing by August 8th [application and payment must be in BMES offices no later than 11:59 p.m. EDST] to be eligible for the member discounted registration rates.   • Presenters will be expected to register for the BMES meeting at the regular student registration rate. Please note: Early registration deadline discounts expire August 29, 2008. If your abstract is not selected and you decide to cancel your registration, you will not be charged a cancellation processing fee.
