Biomedical Engineering Professor Younan Xia was recently named Materials Research Society (MRS) Fellow. The title of MRS Fellow honors members of the Materials Research Society who are notable for their distinguished research accomplishments and outstanding contributions to the advancement of materials research, world-wide. The maximum number of new Fellow appointments each year is limited to 0.2% of the current MRS membership.
Before joining the faculty at Washington University, Professor Xia was a member of the Chemistry faculty at the University of Washington.
The Xia research group is pursuing cutting-edge research in three major frontiers: nanotechnology, materials chemistry, and biomaterials. His research interests include synthesis of nanomaterials, bio-material interface, energy conversion and storage, drug delivery, as well as neural and tissue engineering. His group invented gold nanocages whose tunable optical properties make them excellent candidates for biomedical applications including imaging contrast enhancement, photothermal therapy, and controlled release. Xia currently has more than 300 publications and 10 patents.
